Snow Mold a Problem?

Here in WNY, our turf is susceptible to several winter diseases. One of the most common is Pink Snow Mold. When the snow is melting off, we remain in cold, wet periods of weather, creating a perfect environment for the growth of this fungus.

Symptoms:

Pink Snow molds produces circular bleached patches up to 20 inches in diameter. This disease becomes severe when the turf is subjected to long periods of cool, damp weather. A serious infection can kill turfgrass.

Management:

Pink Snow mold growth can be reduced by cultural methods. Do not apply lawn fertilizer late in the fall season. This can stimulate pre-winter growth. Such growth is very susceptible to infection. Continue to mow turf throughout the fall as turf continues to grow. Where previous areas of Pink Snow mold infection were detected, keep winter snow from accumulating. When the snow has melted off, and grass begins to grow, continue with a regular mowing management. Also, rake out areas of infections to promote spring growth.
